Kindergarten Guidance
"The Crayon Box That Talked"

During my first week of my new job(s)- I am currently employed at two private schools in Memphis, TN :) I met with teachers to see what issues they felt that needed to be addressed in their classrooms. While speaking with the K and 1st grade teachers, kindness and respect were a common issue in their classrooms.

With littles, I always aim to bring something colorful and interactive along with me in order to keep their attention. When it comes to kindness with littles, I found a great guidance lesson using the book "The Crayon Box That Talked". As I mentioned, I LOVE using school counseling blogs for resources and ideas. My guidance lesson is from The Crafty Counselor.

First, I read "The Crayon Box That Talked" (available on Amazon)

This book was super cute in explaining several topics including: kindness, working together, and tolerance. Not the mention the illustrations really aided in keeping the littles interested.

After reading the book, I asked questions including:

  • Why did the crayons not get along in the beginning?
  • What made each crayon special?
  • What happened when the crayons worked together?
  • What would a picture look like if we could only use one color?
Once we discussed, I passed out crayons for the students to decorate to go into our Kindergarten Kindness Crayons.

Finished project
(Please excuse my HORRIBLE cutting skills-kids still loved it and loved seeing the finished project on their hall wall)

Overall, this lesson was super cute and the littles not only LOVED it, but they really took away a great life lesson!
